RFID identification solutions for energy and the environment

A major hydropower producer wants to limit its impact on the environment as much as possible, so it installs fish passes or fish ladders on its dams to enable fish to swim upstream despite the obstacle.

Ensure that fish (salmon, sea lampreys, shad, eels, etc.) actually use the fish passes – if the results are unsatisfactory, the least operational passes will be redeveloped;

Fish are collected downstream of the dam and individually tagged with an RFID chip injected using an injector. Once clearly identified, the fish are released back into the water, again downstream of the dam;

In fish passes, RFID RFID reader antennas antennae are installed and connected either to a computer station or to a detection box that records the passage of fish.

For installations with a complete computer workstation: the data is sent via GPRS to a server accessible to technicians and researchers in real time, wherever they are connected; The RFID reader station is even equipped with a heating system to keep it working properly in winter.

For simpler installations, without a screen or user interface, the data on the fish that have actually passed through the fishway are retrieved on a USB key from the technical room near the fishway;

Tracking the use of fish passes allows us to improve their design in line with the objective of reducing their environmental impact; It also makes it possible to collect precise scientific data on fish migrations in rivers (period, flow, duration, etc.);
