Aeronautical traceability: reliability, compliance and performance

ATA Spec 2000 is the Air Transport Association’s international standard for the identification and data exchange of aircraft parts and equipment. CIPAM provides the software and libraries that encode and decode these identifiers using RFID for inventory management, configuration records, and maintenance traceability in both the aerospace and defense industries.

ATA Spec 2000, Chapter 9: The Common Language for Aerospace Parts

ATA Spec 2000 is the specification maintained by A4A (Airlines for America) that standardizes data exchange in the aviation industry. Chapter 9 specifically addresses automatic part identification: 2D barcodes, RFID, and contact memory. It defines the format of the data marked on the component and exchanged between the aircraft manufacturer, the equipment supplier, and the maintenance facility.

The benefit is clear: a single part, a single identifier, readable and understood by all stakeholders in the chain—from production to maintenance, including the client. This is what makes configuration management, the tracking of parts with a limited service life, and maintenance traceability possible throughout the entire lifecycle of the equipment.

Encoding and Reading ATA Identifiers via RFID

Writing an identifier in the ATA Spec 2000 format to an RFID chip requires precise encoding: data structure, numbering ranges, and readback verification. This is whereATA Manager Mobile comes in: the application encodes and decodes ATA identifiers directly on an RFID terminal, performs inventory counts, captures configuration data, and exports the data to your systems. The operator works in the field, and the data remains compliant with the standard.

The choice of tag is critical for an aerospace part: it must have sufficient memory to store the ATA identifier and be resistant to metal, thermal cycling, and fluids. We validate this choice on your actual parts before any deployment.

Integrating ATA Spec 2000 into Your Applications: The CIPAM Libraries

Do you already have MRO software or a business application? Our ATA libraries, available for Windows (C#.NET) and Android (Java), integrate the ATA Spec 2000 encoding and decoding logic directly into your applications. Your teams don’t have to rebuild the standard’s interpretation—they simply call it. This is the fastest way to add ATA-compliant RFID reading to an existing tool without starting from scratch.

Use Cases

In production, the part’s identifier is encoded as soon as it is manufactured (the “birth record”), so that it enters the already-traced supply chain. In maintenance, an RFID configuration report lists the parts mounted on an assembly in a matter of seconds, without the need for disassembly or manual data entry. For parts with a limited service life, scanning links each component to its history and its next due date. And with every interaction with a client, the data is already transmitted in the correct format.

Frequently asked questions

What is ATA Spec 2000?

The A4A specification standardizes data exchange in the aviation industry. Chapter 9 of the specification provides a framework for the automatic identification of parts using 2D barcodes, RFID, and contact memory.

What is the connection between ATA Spec 2000 and RFID?

The ATA Spec 2000 defines the identifier format; RFID is one of the technologies used to carry it on the part. Encoding a tag in the ATA format ensures that the data will be readable by all parties in the supply chain.

Can we integrate ATA into our existing MRO software?

Yes. Our C#.NET and Java libraries add ATA encoding and decoding to your application without rewriting the standard’s logic.

ATA Spec 2000 and DPM marking: What’s the difference?

DPM marking physically engraves a code onto the part; ATA Spec 2000 defines the format of the identified data, for both DPM and RFID. For direct part marking, see our Aerospace sector page and our page on industrial laser marking.
