How does single-pass RFID printing and encoding work?

An RFID printer performs four operations simultaneously in less than a second.

① The RFID substrate is fed into the printer
The RFID label consists of an inlay (chip + antenna) sandwiched between the substrate layers. It comes on a roll, just like a standard label.

② The internal antenna encodes the chip
An integrated UHF antenna emits a radio field that powers the chip and writes the EPC data (serial number, product code, lot number, etc.) to memory.

③ The thermal print head prints the visible content
At the same time, the thermal print head prints the barcode, human-readable text, QR code, or any other graphic content.

④ The verification reader confirms the encoding
After printing, a built-in reader re-reads the chip and verifies the data. If the encoding fails, the label is marked “VOID” and automatically ejected. No defective labels leave the printer.

What ROI can you expect from a Zebra RFID printer?

Switching to automated RFID printing and encoding generates measurable benefits within the first few months.

Productivity

  • +19% increase in manufacturing productivity (Oxford Economics / Zebra, Sept. 2025)
  • +21% increase in productivity in transportation and logistics (same source)
  • Zero manual encoding errors — automatic verification after every print job

Linerless — Operational and Environmental Benefits

  • +40 to 50% more labels per roll — fewer production line stoppages (Technavio, 2026)
  • −33% less waste sent to landfills, −35% carbon footprint compared to liner (2025)
  • −38% post-consumer waste (Beontag / Labels & Labeling)

TCO: ROI is analyzed across three areas—reduction in shipping errors, time savings for operators, and regulatory compliance. CIPAM can calculate your specific ROI.

Logistics and Distribution

RFID printing and encoding of outbound packages, automated palletizing control, RFID tunnel feeding. The ZD421 RFID integrates directly with WMS systems. The result: shipping errors reduced by a factor of 10, and inventory counts completed 5 to 10 times faster.

Pharmacy and Medical

Batch serialization, UDI traceability, and regulatory labels with RFID encoding. Compliance with EU Regulation 2017/745 (MDR). The ZD621 RFID supports specific formats with built-in verification.

Aeronautics and Industry

RFID printing and encoding on critical parts, MRO traceability, ATA Spec 2000 compliance, and tool tracking. The ZT421 RFID supports wide labels on industrial substrates.

Mass Merchandising and Retail

Linerless labeling for fresh products and packaging—no backing, space-saving, HACCP-compliant. High throughput on packaging lines.

Choosing the Right Supplies for Your Zebra RFID Printer

Choosing the right consumables is just as critical as choosing the right printer. An unsuitable RFID label can cause encoding errors and production line stoppages.

① The chip and the inlay — Impinj Monza R6, NXP UCODE 8… Performance varies depending on reading distance, tag density, and the environment (metal, liquid, high temperature). CIPAM selects the inlay based on your specific use case.

② Substrate and format — Direct thermal paper for standard logistics applications; polypropylene or polyester for humid or chemical environments; polyimide for high-temperature applications.

③ The adhesive —permanent, removable, high-temperature, or for curved surfaces—the wrong adhesive causes the label to peel off before it can be scanned. A lost tag = a break in traceability.

CIPAM offers more than 2,000 models of certified RFID labels and tags compatible with the ZD421, ZD621, and ZT421. Testing on actual parts is conducted before any commitment is made.

Technical Integration — ZPL, Link-OS, and Middleware Architecture

ZPL — Zebra’s native language

ZPL (Zebra Programming Language) controls the printer from your IT system. Here is a minimal example for encoding an RFID tag and printing a barcode:

^XA
^RFW,H^FD303456789ABCDEF^FS
^FO50,50^BCN,100,Y,N,N^FD123456789^FS
^XZ

Link-OS SDK — Comprehensive REST API: sending commands, reading status, reporting errors, and remote fleet management. Compatible with Java, Python, .NET, and PHP.

CIPAM Middleware Architecture — For projects involving multiple printers or multiple sites:

  • Print Job Priority Queue
  • Serialization and Uniqueness of EPCs
  • Validation of Each Entry and Handling of Rejections
  • Upload to ERP via API, web service, or file

Tested and validated ERP and WMS systems: SAP EWM, Oracle WMS, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage X3, Reflex WMS, Hardis Solochain, Generix.

Why choose CIPAM over an online retailer?

An e-commerce site might sell you a Zebra printer. CIPAM does something else.

FAQ — Zebra RFID Printers

For moderate-volume logistics operations, the ZD421 RFID is the most common choice. For high-volume operations or large labels, the ZT421 RFID is recommended. CIPAM conducts an audit of your needs before making any recommendations.

Yes—in a single pass, the printer prints the barcode and simultaneously encodes the RFID chip. A read check verifies the encoding after each print job.

Via the native ZPL language, the Link-OS API, or middleware developed by CIPAM. Supported ERP systems: SAP EWM, Oracle WMS, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage X3, Reflex WMS, Hardis Solochain, Generix.

The ZD621 is the advanced version: same width (104 mm) but with a 4.3″ touchscreen, a higher print speed (203 vs. 152 mm/s), and more memory. The ZD421 is preferred for multiple deployments, while the ZD621 is preferred for supervised workstations.

Yes — linerless option available on the ZD421 and ZD621. Printing without a paper backing reduces waste and increases throughput. Can be combined with RFID encoding on certain linerless RFID substrates.

Yes — CIPAM is a Zebra Authorized Service Center. We provide: product selection, ZPL configuration, IT integration, training, maintenance contracts, and after-sales service using genuine parts.
